English proficiency of Japanese people is too low
An izakaya (Japanese style pub) owner in Tokyo went bananas on X after a foreign tourist asked for him an English menu.
I think one of these type of problems is that Japanese people’s poor English proficiency.
In 2014, the Japanese government launched a full-scale reform of English education.
However, Japan’s English proficiency index ranking tanked from 26th in 2014 to 87th in 2023.
In Japan, there are not many opportunities to speak English.
And even if you have the ability to speak English fluently, it would not lead to high income.
These things probably led to the failure of English education in Japan.
